Connecting to the Torus

Connection Methods

There are two ways to connect to the Torus network: using a dedicated edge router or running WireGuard directly on your device.

Option 1: Edge Router (Recommended)

The cleanest approach is a small, dedicated router that handles everything:

  • WireGuard tunnel to the Torus
  • Firewall protecting your equipment
  • NAT for devices that need internet access
  • Routing between your local network and the Torus

Why Use an Edge Router?

BenefitExplanation
Connect anythingShare devices that can't run modern software - vintage computers, game consoles, network printers
Always onRouter stays connected 24/7, no need to manually start VPN
Clean separationYour main devices don't need VPN software installed
Professional NATProper firewall and NAT rules, not consumer-grade workarounds

We recommend MikroTik devices running RouterOS v7:

ModelPriceBest For
hEX (RB750Gr3)~$60Most users - handles everything needed
hEX S (RB760iGS)~$80Need SFP port or PoE output
hAP ac²~$65Need built-in WiFi

Configure once and forget. These devices are rock solid.

Option 2: Direct WireGuard Client

You can also run WireGuard directly on your computer, phone, or server:

  • Windows/Mac/Linux: Install the WireGuard app
  • iOS/Android: WireGuard app from app store
  • Servers: Built into Linux kernel, or use wireguard-tools

When to Use Direct Connection

  • You only want to connect one device
  • You need mobile access to the Torus
  • Testing before setting up a permanent router

Getting Your Configuration

  1. Log into your Dashboard
  2. Go to the VPN Configuration section
  3. Download your .conf file
  4. Import into WireGuard app or configure your router

Your configuration includes:

  • Your private key (keep this secret!)
  • Your assigned Torus IP address
  • Server public key and endpoint
  • Allowed IP ranges

After Connecting

Verify your connection by visiting the Torus Echo test page. If you see "Connection Successful", you're on the network!
