Alternative Hardware
While we recommend MikroTik routers, several other brands support WireGuard. These options haven't been tested by us, but should work with your Nekotopia configuration.
Consumer Router Options
ASUS
| Model | Price | WireGuard Support |
|---|---|---|
| RT-AX86U | ~$250 | Firmware 388.x+ |
| RT-AX88U | ~$300 | Firmware 388.x+ |
| GT-AX11000 | ~$400 | Gaming-focused, fastest WireGuard |
Notes: ASUS gaming routers handle WireGuard exceptionally well (400-800 Mbps throughput). Requires firmware version 388.x or newer.
TP-Link
| Model | Price | WireGuard Support |
|---|---|---|
| Archer AX55 | ~$100 | Firmware-dependent |
| Archer AX73 | ~$150 | Firmware-dependent |
Notes: WireGuard support varies by region and firmware version. Not as mature as ASUS implementation.
GL.iNet
These compact routers run OpenWrt under the hood with a user-friendly interface.
| Model | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mango (GL-MT300N) | ~$30 | Tiny, great for travel |
| Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) | ~$90 | WiFi 6, excellent performance |
| Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) | ~$190 | High-end home router |
Notes: GL.iNet devices are popular in the WireGuard community for their easy setup. Trade-off: they're designed more for travel/prosumer use than as powerhouse home routers.
Alternative Platforms
If you prefer running WireGuard on general-purpose hardware:
- Raspberry Pi — Perfect for a dedicated VPN gateway (~$35-75)
- Old PC with pfSense/OPNsense — Full-featured firewall with WireGuard
- OpenWrt device — Any supported router can run WireGuard
Tip: If you're unsure, stick with a MikroTik hEX. It's what we use and support best.
